About one in 88 children has been identified with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) according to estimates from the Center for Disease Control’s Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network. The diagnosis of ASD may leave parents and caretakers with questions about the disorder. Pediatric Therapy Partners (PTP), a Fargo-based therapy practice for children from birth to 18 years of age, has recognized this need for ongoing autism communication and education and has developed a free, three-part seminar to educate parents and the community.

From 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 11, at the Ramada Plaza and Suites in Fargo, PTP will present part one of the seminar. This first part in the series will cover the basics of ASD and will further explain the diagnosis.

“For parents who have a child with autism, it can be a confusing time whether their child was recently diagnosed or has been living with autism for some time. There have been some recent changes in the criteria involved in the diagnosis of children with autism, and we’re [PTP] here to be a resource for those parents as they work through any questions or concerns they may have,” Rachel Stotts, lead therapist of PTP’s Autism Team, said.

The series aims to cover a variety of topics for families at all stages of autism, from those families with children who have already been diagnosed to families who may have concerns about their child. The series will be broken down by topic:

*Part 1 - “Autism Spectrum Disorders: What does it mean for your child? Explaining the diagnosis.” will be held from 6:30 - 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 11.

*Part 2 - “Autism Spectrum Disorders: Treatments and resources to help your child succeed.” will be held from 6:30 - 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 9.

*Part 3 - “Autism Spectrum Disorders: Tips and ideas that work for home and community life.” will be held from 6:30 - 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 13.

“We developed this seminar to provide a place for parents and caregivers to gather to learn more about the new developments in autism spectrum disorders. Part one of the seminar will provide more background on autism’s signs, the new criteria involved in diagnosis and the disorder itself. It will discuss what autism means for your child, while part two and part three of the seminar will focus on different therapy and resource options and tips and ideas to help support families with children with autism in their home and community life,” Stotts added.

Attendees do not need to attend all parts of the seminar, nor do they need to attend the first part to be able to attend part two or three.

The seminar is open to everyone, but space is limited, so those interested in attending part one are asked to RSVP to the event by calling PTP at 701.232.2340 or emailing info@PediatricTherapyPartners.com.
