Former Callaway, Audubon and Lake Park resident Ralph A. Matter, 86, of Detroit Lakes, died Monday, January 14, 2008 at St. Mary's Nursing Center in Detroit Lakes.

Ralph Alfred Matter was born to Alfred and Ruth (Frantz) Matter on March 28, 1921 at Wabasso, Minn. As a young boy, he moved with his family to rural Callaway, and attended rural Callaway schools. In 1944 he began farming with his family. He served with the U.S. Army, 1945-46. Following his discharge, he returned to rural Callaway, where he continued to farm. Ralph married Joyce Flynn on Feb. 14, 1952 in Callaway. They farmed and raised their family in Audubon Township, rural Audubon. They moved to Lake Ida in Cormorant Township in 1981, and to Detroit Lakes in 2000. Ralph entered St. Mary's Nursing Center in February 2007.

Ralph was an active member of Assumption Catholic Church in Callaway, St. Francis Xavier Church, Lake Park and Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes; the Elks, Eagles, Holy Rosary Knights of Columbus, Country Twirlers Square Dance Club and served on the boards of the Lake Park and Audubon elevators. He enjoyed his family, farming, dancing (especially square dancing), traveling (having visited Mexico and every state in the United States and every province in Canada), a good discussion and collecting cars, teapots and caps.

Surviving Ralph are his wife, Joyce Matter of Detroit Lakes; sons, Russell (Joyce) Matter of Moorhead, Ralph Jr. (Mary) Matter of Thief River Falls, Richard (Kelly) Matter of Coon Rapids and Roland (Shannon) Matter of Burnsville, Minn.; daughters, Kathleen (Allen) Klindt of Audubon, Jacqueline (LeRoy) Vandermay of Wadena, Regina (fiancée Kevin Hutchison) of Fargo, Diane (Jerry) Yonga of Brooklyn Park, Minn., and Joyce (Jon C.) Stone of Detroit Lakes; 23 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; brothers, Jerome (Mary) Matter of Callaway, James (Betty) Matter of Callaway and Linus (Marilyn) Matter of Hopkins, Minn.; and sisters, LaVonne Jacobson of Detroit Lakes, Aileen Melis of Superior, Wis., and Cleo Steffl of Detroit Lakes. Preceding him in death were his daughter, Mary Patricia, and his parents.

Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17 at Holy Rosary Church in Detroit Lakes. The Knights of Columbus will pray the Rosary at 6:30 p.m., followed by a Parish Vigil Service at 7 p.m., all in the church. Visita-tion will continue for one hour prior to the funeral at the church on Friday.

A mass of Christian burial is scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes, with the Rev. Thomas Friedl officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Callaway. The David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes is serving the family.
