Recreation at its finest, both indoors and out
Cold, cold temps seem to be in the forecast at least for the start of this year's Winter Days festivities today (Wednesday).
Not necessarily a bad thing, just requiring the need to bundle up a little bit more to face the challenge of the elements when it comes to some of the outdoor events.
A really nice aspect of the celebration is that a greater share of the actions have grown to be indoor activities.
Winter Days has been around in some form for the past several years.
The recollection is that it it first started out as Winter Fest, jointly sponsored by Moorhead, Fargo and West Fargo, with events held around the three communities.
When the interest of doing that waned, the West Fargo Park District took over the promotion and continued the yearly ritual naming it Winter Days.
What it has evolved into is a fun, family-oriented observance that has settled in on a schedule of events, fine-tuned and honed through the years according to public interest.
In that regard the activities that have been offered the past several years have been tested and approved as the ever-popular ones that people like to take in or be a part of.
There is something to be said for consistency and building a popular base and the Park District staff deserves credit for making that happen.
On that note, this year's activities that will run from Jan. 16 through Jan. 26 include many of the good old, stand-bys including the Snow Golf tourney, the afternoon Winter Days party at Cheney Middle School, a bucket full of library-related happenings, as well as the highly popular Silver Snowflake Search with happy winners receiving a variety of really great prizes.
Each year there are also a few new additions offering great, fresh appeal, among them Cosmic Bowling at Stars and Strikes and a Salsa contest that correlates with the highly touted Chili Cookoff held each year at the West Fargo VFW.
If you have never taken in Winter Days, this year would be a good one to give it a try. And for those of you who don't miss it each year, I'm sure you already have your list of favorites mapped out.
Our paper this week features the Winter Days Word Search, a yearly staple to the annual happening. Check it out and enjoy. Also get a glimpse of the first clues in your quest to locate those silver snowflakes.
