Richard C. Holte

Richard C. Holte, 63, West Fargo, died on Friday, October 30, 2009 at his home.

Richard C. Holte was born September 19, 1946, at Thief River Falls Minn. to Carl and Mary (Satre) Holte. He grew up on the family farm near Grygla, Minn. and graduated from Goodridge (Minn.) High School. He attended vocational school at Thief River Falls, Minn. where he received a degree in accounting. Richard was drafted into the U.S. Army in December 1965 and did basic training with C/2/22 and after basic became a cook with Alpha Co. of the Triple Deuce. On September 22, 1966, he boarded the troopship USS General Nelson M Walker with 5,000 troops of the 3rd Brigade, 4th Infantry Division for a 20 day voyage to Vietnam. He was a caring cook that helped make the one nightly hot meal sent to the troops in combat as good as possible. He never forgot his fellow draftee soldier buddies and was saddened by their suffering. Occasionally he rode helicopter with the nightly chow and stayed overnight in the infantry logger area and returned the marmite cans to base camp the next morning. He left Vietnam in September 1967. Upon discharge, he started working with the Great Northern Railroad. Through mergers, he worked for the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad for 40 years before retiring in September 2007. He reconnected with army buddies at a reunion in San Antonio, Texas and made every reunion thereafter including the Seattle reunion from which he just returned.

He was a lifetime member of the West Fargo VFW, member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was a member of St. Paul's Free Lutheran Church. He enjoyed traveling and traveled to Norway twice in recent years. He was young at heart and in summers liked to sport around in either his convertible or motorcycle. Richard also enjoyed fishing, visiting with people, helping fix things, working on various projects and watching his grandson's sporting activities and spending time with him. He valued his faith, family, and friends as they were the most important to him and he loved attending get-togethers. He loved getting together with his family and going out to dinner. He was very kind, caring, had a sarcastic sense of humor and always liked to get the last word in. He would help anyone and everyone. This past spring he put in several hours sandbagging at the FargoDome to help with the flood fight.

Richard is survived by two daughters, Diane Holte, West Fargo, Brenda (Jeremy) Grandstrand, Fargo; one grandson, Payton Grandstrand, Fargo; two brothers, Jerry (Peggy) Holte, East Grand Forks, Minn., Jim (Gloria) Holte, Grygla, Minn.; several nieces and nephews, many special friends including Themis Ann Waddington, Putman, CT and Dakota, his beloved Yorkie.
