The West Fargo favorite Sandy’s Donuts and Coffee is quickly expanding, but it will remain a staple in West Fargo’s downtown.

Owner Mark Ostlund announced last week that a new location would be opening in downtown Fargo this summer. Sandy’s has leased about 1,000 square feet of space at 300 Broadway from Art Materials.

Ostlund said the downtown Fargo site will be a retail store.

Initially, only doughnuts and coffee will be sold, with plans to later offer lunches as the business does in West Fargo, he said.

All doughnuts will continue to be made at the Sandy’s Donuts location in West Fargo, where a 2,000-square-foot kitchen expansion is planned, he said.

Sandy’s Donuts and Coffee has been at 301 Main Ave. in West Fargo since about 2005. The business was opened in 1983 by Ostlund’s father.

As part of a two-year goal, Ostlund said he is also considering opening a location in south Fargo.

“It’s an idea at this point, but it’s a good idea,” he said.

The business now employs about 50 people and has four delivery vans.

“We started out with just a little car, putting doughnuts in the back window,” he said.

Sandy’s advanced to a station wagon and later a van.

Now, three vans leave every morning deliving doughnuts throughout Fargo-Moorhead, Ostlund said.

An additional sprinter van is being added as a marketing vehicle out of which doughnuts and coffee will be sold, he said.

Don’t be surprised to see the “big orange sprinter van in a sea of yellow at Bison tailgating,” Ostlund said.

The new Fargo store will open Aug. 19. Hours will be 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday, he said.
