Mixed Martial Arts is a full contact combat sport that combines a mixture of martial arts traditions such as Jiu-jitsu, boxing and wrestling. Striking and grappling techniques while standing and on the mat are employed. Martial artists of different backgrounds are able, in this manner, to compete, pitting their art and technique against other styles and techniques.

A match consists of three, five minute rounds. Victory in a match is gained in one of several ways: either by the judges' decision, a stoppage by the referee or ring doctor, by submission, knockout or by a competitor's cornerman throwing in the towel. A fighter may admit defeat during a match by tapping out.
