School board accepts bids for snow removal

While most North Dakotans likely shudder at the thought of winter as fall just kicks off, West Fargo Public Schools is preparing well in advance.

During Monday's meeting of the school board, several contractors were awarded bids for snow removal at various campuses across the district. The winning bidders were:

• Gast Construction, for Aurora Elementary, Sheyenne Ninth Grade Center, and Osgood Kindergarten Center.

• Glacier Snow Management, covering the high school, Cheney Middle School, and Eastwood and Berger Elementary schools.

• Shermans LLC, for the Lodoen Community Center, Westside Elementary and the transportation building.

• Lindemann Concrete, Harwood Elementary.

• Russell Brink, Horace Elementary.

Snow removal was bid as a lump sum per snow event per removal, Business Manager Mark Lemer said. There were exceptions, however, as Lindemann Concrete and Russell Brink were awarded hourly rates.

Last year, there were 18 snow events at Horace, which totaled less than $1,700. If a lump sum were used instead of an hourly rate, Lemer said, the district would need just two snowfalls to exceed that amount.

Lemer said Building and Grounds Director Pete Diemert identified snow removal stockpile locations at each school as part of the bid process. If these fill up, the district will pay an hourly rate for truck usage.

Also Monday, the board approved $15,300 worth of construction improvements at Aurora Elementary school. The project would create some "much-needed conference space" to the left of the entrance, Lemer said.

Because the estimate is less than the amount required by the state to bid, officials will negotiate with contractors already working in the district to complete the construction.
