The four will be the first head coaches of their respective programs.

Kirchoffner is a physical education and health instructor at Sheyenne and has been assisting with the West Fargo basketball program since 2011. Most recently, he served as the freshmen boys’ basketball coach for the Sheyenne program.

Hintz brings ten years of head coaching experience with him to Sheyenne High School. For the past six years, he has served as head coach of the Grand Forks Central girls’ basketball team. Prior to his tenure in Grand Forks, he spent four years guiding the Sheridan County girls’ basketball team. He will be employed by the West Fargo School District as a secondary social studies instructor.

Mr. Newton is a physical education teacher at Los Lunas High School in Los Lunas, N.M. Mr. Newton has been the head football coach at Los Lunas the past three seasons, compiling a 30-6 record during that span. He was recognized as the New Mexico 4A Coach of the Year this past season after guiding Los Lunas to a state playoff runner-up finish and a 12-1 record. Newton will be employed as a physical education teacher at Sheyenne High School.

Mrs. Newton is currently a social studies teacher in the Los Lunas School District and has been the Los Lunas High School head volleyball coach for the past two years. Her teams have gone undefeated in district play during her tenure as head coach and have won over eighty percent of their matches. Newton will be employed as a teacher within the West Fargo Public Schools.

After interviewing and subsequently selecting Kirchoffner and Hintz to lead the basketball programs, Richards stated, “Mr. Kirchoffner has excellent experiences as an educator, coach and athlete. He interacts well with students and possesses an energy level, passion and perspective for the job that make him an outstanding fit for a program in its infancy and beyond.”

Regarding Hintz, Richards said, “Mr. Hintz brings to the table an attractive combination of experience and attention to detail that will serve him well as he takes on the task of building a program from the ground up.”

Upon selecting the Newtons to take the helm of the football and volleyball programs, Richards said, “We are excited for the Newton family and News as equally excited for the students involved in the football and volleyball programs at Sheyenne.

“Both Jeremy and Leah bring over ten years of coaching experience at the high school and collegiate levels with them to West Fargo. What is most impressive is that each has distinguished themselves as a coach who possesses the ability to bring programs to new levels of success.”

West Fargo Sheyenne High School is in the process of being phased in over the next three years, one grade level at a time. The Sheyenne basketball programs are slated to begin varsity-level competition in the Eastern Dakota Conference in 2014-15. The school’s transition will be complete in 2015-16 when this year’s freshmen become its first graduating class.
