Student expulsion policy revisions proposed
The West Fargo School Board heard the first reading of proposed revisions to the district's policy on suspension and expulsion of students during the January 10 meeting held at Horace Elementary School. If approved, the policy revisions will move the responsibility of expelling students from the school board to the superintendent, with the exception of firearms violations, which would still be heard by the whole board.
Under the new guidelines, the superintendent would notify the board president whenever incidents arise. Together, the board president and superintendent would have the option to have an expulsion hearing conducted by the school board.
If a family wishes to appeal the superintendent's decision, they would have a "10 working day" deadline to request the appeal, as recommended by the district's attorney.
The board will vote on the proposal during the next regular scheduled meeting on January 26.
The board authorized the district to advertise for bids to purchase fitness equipment in conjunction with a PEP fitness grant the district has secured. Bids will be requested for recumbent and stationary bikes, treadmills, and stair climbers. The equipment will be installed at the Sheyenne Ninth Grade Center, and the high school.
In other action, the board reviewed and approved the audit report for the fiscal year ending on June 30, 2008; reviewed and approved the 2009-2010 school calendar; approved a request from a part-time teacher to be released from her contract under special circumstances; and reviewed the fund raising report.
The next regular school board meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on January 26, at the Kindergarten Center. Other meetings coming up include the Midyear Retreat on January 21, from 4:30 to 8 p.m., at the Timberlodge Steakhouse, and a Planning and Development meeting on January 28, at 7 a.m. in the Leidal Education Center boardroom.
