Swimmers top Fargo North in final dual
The Packers swim team finished its final dual of the regular season the same it finished almost every meet this season, topping the Fargo North Spartans 99-87 on Friday night.
The team took first in eight of the 12 events against the Spartans.
“It was a good chance to mix up our relay teams to see what works best for us,” head coach Sally Sautner said. “The girls knew what I was doing, and they managed to work things out.”
Friday night was also Senior Night for the Packers, and the seniors responded with several strong performances.
Leading the team was senior Danica Dutt and sophomore Hallie Peterson, both of whom took first in two individual events and two relays.Dutt finished first in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:16.09 and the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 59.16. She also finished first as a part of the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relay teams.Peterson finished first in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle races, with times of 25.53 and 54.61, respectively. She was also a part of the freestyle relay teams. The 400-yard freestyle relay proved to be the highlight of the night, as the Packers team -- which also included sophomores Mykin Gunning and Emily Bourassa -- finished with a time of 3:43.19, beating Fargo North’s top team by just .11 seconds.Senior diver Dani Davis took first in the one-meter diving event with 173 points. Freshman Haley Pederson took second with a score of 162.45.Despite the solid performances, North still managed to keep it interesting.“Up until the 100 fly (sixth event), they were all tied up with us,” Sautner said. “I mentioned that to the girls, and they really stepped up to the challenge.”With the Eastern Dakota Conference tournament taking place on Saturday at Fargo Davies High School, the Packers had to make some roster cuts in order to focus on the playoffs.“We said goodbye to about 20 of the younger girls, and we may have to say goodbye to a few more,” Sautner said. “It is great to have the pool space, but we are missing some of that rookie spirit. It takes some of the magic away, but we will just have to step it up a bit and continue supporting each other. The conference tournament begins at 1:45 p.m. on Saturday.
