With six weeks left to go before the opening ceremonies of this year's American Cancer Society Cass County Relay For Life, 28 teams have already registered to participate in the family-friendly event. The 2010 Cass County Relay For Life is set for Friday and Saturday, July 30-31, 6 to 7 p.m., at Oak Grove Park in Fargo.
"Our team recruitment committee has gone beyond the call of duty to register teams for this year," said Doug Stetz, Community Relationship Manager for the American Cancer Society. "However, we realize we've only scratched the surface when it comes to contacting area businesses and organizations to form teams, so we're asking the media for help."
Traditionally, teams are comprised of friends, family members, cancer survivors, students and co-workers. Once registered, the teams fundraise online, by selling luminaria, and through a variety of team fundraising activities. The day of the event, the teams show up at Oak Grove Park and pitch their campsites. Then, following the opening ceremonies and cancer survivors lap, the teams are asked to have one member walking the track at all times. When they aren't walking, the team members are typically found visiting other campsites, partaking in the activities, games and entertainment, or enjoying the many food venues.
The registration fee for each team is $100.
Stetz says the luminaria sales are ahead of last year's pace. Luminaria are sold by each team member to honor loved ones who have died of cancer or to celebrate those still bravely fighting the disease. Just after dusk the evening of the relay, the luminaria are placed around the inside lane of the track. The lights are dimmed and the glow of the luminaria serves to light the way for the walkers as they make their way around the track. The suggested donation for the luminaria is $10.
