A deputy noticed the car going 77 mph in a residential area posted at 25 mph about 12:53 a.m., Capt. Rick Majerus said.

The deputy turned around to pull the vehicle over, but when he caught up to it, he saw that it had failed to negotiate a turn on Langer Avenue and went down a ditch about 10 to 15 feet into Swan Creek Coulee, Majerus said.

The 17-year-old driver, who had a 16-year-old male passenger from Casselton in the car, was cited for aggravated reckless driving and driving under the influence, Majerus said.

The teens were not injured and were not in danger of drowning in the small creek, he said.

The damaged car was impounded, he said.
