Timothy Sweeney

June 14, 1947-May 6, 2009

Timothy L. Sweeney, 61, of Detroit Lakes, died Wednesday, May 6, 2009 at St. Mary's Innovis Health in Detroit Lakes.

Timothy L. Sweeney was born to Raymond F. and Elsie (Albright) Sweeney on June 14, 1947 in Fargo. In 1953, the family moved to the northwest side of Floyd Lake in rural Detroit Lakes. Tim attended Holy Rosary Catholic School and was a 1966 graduate of Detroit Lakes High School.

In the summer of 1966, Tim enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served on the USS Henry Clay (SSBN625), attaining the rank of TM2 (SU). While on the Henry Clay (a submarine), he traveled to many parts of the world, much of the time below the surface of the sea. He passed the gateway to the top of the world over the Arctic Circle in 1968 and received his Dolphins, the symbol of this accomplishment.

After an especially difficult tour under the sea, Tim was diagnosed with diabetes and received an honorable medical discharge on July 6, 1977. While in the Navy, Tim married Christine Moskos on Oct. 5, 1969 in Charleston, S.C. Following his discharge, he worked as a repairman for Sears in Charleston, until moving back to Detroit Lakes in 1977. He worked as a carpenter and a stone mason until becoming permanently disabled in 1988. Tim married Lanette Nelson on June 16, 1979 in Litchfield, Minn.

Tim greatly enjoyed spending time with his children, family and friends. He lived to fish and hunt. He loved telling stories of being in the Navy, living in South Carolina, his fishing and hunting exploits, and where the next fishing adventure was to be with his long time friend, Russ.

Surviving Tim are three sons and a daughter, Timothy II (Rhonda) Sweeney of Lake Park, Nichole Grubes of North Columbia, S.C., Joshua (Jamie) Sweeney of Detroit Lakes and Eric Sweeney of Detroit Lakes; 11 grandchildren; his companion and caregiver, Lanny Sweeney of Detroit Lakes; four brothers and two sisters, Gerald (Karen) Sweeney of Hartwell, Ga., Stephen (Peggy) Sweeney of Savannah, Ga., Ray Sweeney of Detroit Lakes, Therese Sweeney of Detroit Lakes, Pat (Sue) Sweeney of Detroit Lakes, and Joan (Marty) Bizjack of Battleground, Wash.
