Ty's Take: Week of wins for West Fargo teams
Even the most ardent pessimist would have a hard time finding anything wrong with the past week of competition.
Well, the Packers wrestling team did finish second at the Bismarck rotary, but it was by a measly two points - negligible in my book - and only after they cleaned Grand Forks Central's clock 60-12 on Tuesday.
In fact, it may have been far and away the winning-est week of the season for all of Packer-dom.
Talk about exciting; here's a quick recap on just what happened.
Girls hockey: The Packers responded to a four-game losing streak earlier this season with a four-game winning streak. West Fargo's most recent of those came Friday and Saturday on a road trip out west. The Packers (6-4-0) started by defeating Minot 4-0, before dropping Williston 7-2 the next day. Hayley Walsh picked up three goals over the series, as did Chelsea Wangen (although hers came in the form of a hat-trick against the Coyotes). West Fargo played Tuesday against Jamestown (5-5-1), but results were unavailable by press time. They play again 7 p.m. Friday at Devils Lake (1-9-0).
Boys hockey: West Fargo improved to 6-7 on the season after defeating Devils Lake 5-2 on Saturday. Five different Packers picked up goals, and netminder Bailey Verberg made 23 stops on the night. Their next game is 7:30 p.m. Thursday hosting Fargo South-Shanley (5-6-0). Then on Saturday, the Packers travel north for a 7:30 p.m. puck-drop against conference leading Grafton-Park River (8-4-1).
Boys swimming: The Packers had a stellar week, beginning Friday with a 123.5-62.5 dual win over Central. Then on Saturday, West Fargo racked up 398.5 points to take first place at the Thomas Manley Memorial Invitational at Fargo Davies High School. The Packers garnered wins in the 200 freestyle, 100 butterfly, 100 freestyle and 400 freestyle relay. On Friday, West Fargo gets a visit from Mandan for a 5 p.m. dual. Then on Saturday, the Packers head north to Grand Forks for the University of North Dakota Invitational.
Wrestling: Following their big showing at the Rumble on the Red, the Packers kept the momentum going last week with a 60-12 dual victory Tuesday over Grand Forks Central. Then over the weekend, West Fargo got a chance to test its mettle in a sort of state tournament litmus test during the Bismarck Rotary Tournament. Bismarck High School took top honors with 168.5 points, edging the Packers by a mere two points. West Fargo had eight placers, while Preston Lehmann garnered its lone championship with a pin at 182 pounds. This week, West Fargo hosts Fargo South at 7 p.m. Thursday.
