Ty's Take: West Fargo waxes, wanes in week of competition

With the spring prep sports season on its downward slope, a pecking order of sorts has emerged between teams.

In most cases, Packers are holding their own across the board; teams that have struggled are bouncing back, and those that have held their own all season generally are sitting pretty.

Look at West Fargo track and field, for example.

On Tuesday, both boys and girls teams took first place at the Owen Jensen Kiwanis meet at the North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton.

They had another strong showing Friday as hosts of the Packer relays. The West Fargo boys finished first with 180 pounds, while the girls slipped out of the winning spot for the first time all season with an 81-point fourth-place effort.

The West Fargo boys golf team also had an up-and-down week, shooting a 308 to take their third straight Eastern Dakota Conference victory Tuesday at Rose Creek Golf Course, before placing third in the two-day Fargo North Invitational at Edgewood with a combined score of 615 strokes. Winner Moorhead was 18 strokes better.

With a 5-1 EDC record and 8-2 overall, the Packers girls tennis team currently is tied for second with Fargo North in the conference standings. Last week, West Fargo had back-to-back 9-0 wins after defeating Jamestown on Monday, and Wahpeton on Tuesday.

West Fargo baseball had another solid week, going 3-1 against conference opponents. The Packers started by sweeping Fargo South 9-7, 11-0 on Tuesday, before splitting with Wahpeton 1-2, 5-0 on Friday. West Fargo is 17-4 overall, and tied with the Spartans for third in the EDC.

And finally, West Fargo girls soccer beat Grand Forks Central 5-2 on Tuesday, and Fargo South 2-1 on Thursday. The Packers are now 5-4 in conference play, and fourth in the standings.
