UPDATE: Missing 9-year-old boy now home safe after spending night at friend's house
Police say a Moorhead boy who was missing overnight is now back home.
Nine-year-old Mitchell Wells hadn't been seen since 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Romkey Park area of Moorhead.
He returned home at about 8:10 a.m. today after reportedly spending the night an at acquaintance's house without inquiring with his mother first, Moorhead Police Lt. Tory Jacobson said in a news release.
Investigators are currently interviewing Wells and can confirm that he is safe and unharmed, the release stated.
Police and the boy's family thanked the community and media for understanding the seriousness of the situation. Officers went door to door in the neighborhood and sent out a Code Red alert shortly after 3 a.m. to solicit information about Mitchell's whereabouts.
"The lack of information in this case was a large factor in deciding to additionally utilize the city Code Red Alert system to the local neighborhood of this child," the news release stated. "We apologize for the inconvenience of the early phone notifications, however we believe this important resource should be utilized when unique situations present themselves."
