Former Ada and Moorhead resident Vernon A. Stevens, 86, of Detroit Lakes, died Thursday, May 14, 2009 at St. Mary's Innovis Health in Detroit Lakes.
Vernon Albert Stevens was born to Harry and Jessie (Davidson) Stevens on Aug. 30, 1922 in Ada, Minn. He was raised and educated near Ada. Vernon later lived near Hibbing, Minn., where he worked in building construction. He moved to Moorhead in the mid 1950's and worked in commercial building construction. He worked as a caretaker for Moorhead State University from 1977 to 1992. Vernon retired in 1992 and moved to Detroit Lakes.
Vernon enjoyed helping people by doing handyman chores; ice fishing, playing cards and visiting with his neighbors.
Surviving Vernon are two sons, Thomas (Phyllis) Stevens of Piedmont, S.D., and Randall (Debora) Stevens of Fargo; three grandchildren; and one sister, LuVerne Hopwood of Sauk Centre, Minn.
Preceding him in death were two brothers.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday, May 18 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes, with Chaplain Vicki Marthaler officiating. Friends may call for one hour prior to the service at Emmanuel.
Interment will be at 1:45 p.m. Monday in the Ada City Cemetery, Ada.
