Veterans Day honors all service people

Veterans Day is Sunday, November 11 and no organization is more committed to service men and women than the West Fargo VFW Post and Ladies Auxiliary.

Many Americans mistakenly believe that Veterans Day is the day America sets aside to honor American military personnel who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained from combat. That's not quite true. Memorial Day is the day set aside to honor America's war dead.

Veterans Day, on the other hand, honors all American veterans, both living and dead. In fact, Veterans Day is largely intended to thank living veterans for dedicated and loyal service to their country.

On that note, the West Fargo VFW Post and Ladies Auxiliary and AMVETS Post 8 will be hosting their annual Veterans Day program on Sunday to accomplish just that starting with a flag raising ceremony at 11 a.m. outside followed by a program in the inside upper level.

Master of ceremonies will be post commander Mike Wiersma and guest speaker will be Cass County Sheriff Paul Laney.

Members of the West Fargo High School band will provide the music directed by Sue Jordahl. Brandon Millar, a student at NDSU, will provide vocal selections and the program will conclude with a 21-gun salute by the VFW Honor Guard and TAPS.

The program part of the Veterans Day observance is open to all ages.

A stew dinner will be served at the VFW Post from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. followed by a patriotic concert performed by the Red River Valley Veteran's Concert Band at 7 p.m. The band is all-volunteer, totally supported through contributions, of which the West Fargo VFW is a community sponsor.

The stew and music performance is free and open to the adult public who are welcome and encouraged to take in all the fellowship and comaraderie the day has to offer.
