Weather forces Alumni Scrimmage reschedule
An alumni boys soccer scrimmage planned for early August has been rescheduled and changed.
Junior varsity and varsity Packers teams will be hosting Fargo South on Thursday, Sept. 8, at the Lodoen Center, with matches set to begin at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively.
The games will be set up as a fundraiser to help benefit Rachel Bearfield, who currently is battling breast cancer. She has worked at West Fargo Public Schools for nearly 25 years, and for the past nine years as an administrative assistant at Eastwood Elementary School.
The benefit originally was scheduled for Aug. 12, and slated as the seventh annual Boys Soccer Alumni Pre-Season Scrimmage. Current and former Packers were going to face against each other, but the event was canceled because of inclement weather.
"Hopefully Mother Nature will accommodate us for this re-scheduled event," West Fargo coach Doug Millar said.
Bearfield, who has triple negative breast cancer, has been a staple at WFPS as well as its soccer programs. She hosted two lost boys of Sudan, Simon and Santino, who both played for West Fargo soccer teams.
This is the third year the West Fargo boys soccer team has set up games as benefits to people in the community. In its first year, the scrimmage sponsored Ronnie Engelking, a past player and captain with the Packers. Last year, then 3-year-old Matt Strahm was the benefactor.
Millar said that he and girls varsity coach James Moe guess the annual scrimmage has garnered more than $3,000 for the previous fundraisers.
