A fundraising event has been set for Tuesday at the Cheney Middle School gymnasium in support of the family of freshman Charley Weber. The event includes a “Chuck It” dodgeball tournament, food, a silent auction and inflatable games from Games Galore.
Weber - along with his friend, Dustin Stedman - was in a serious snowmobile accident on New Year’s Eve, in which Charley suffered a traumatic brain injury.
Both boys were injured in the accident and are working toward a full recovery. Dustin has since returned to school and Charley is continuing outpatient rehabilitation. He hopes to return to school in the near future.
Charley’s family is very active within the school district. His mother, Michelle, is the principal at the West Fargo STEM Center and his father, Jeff, teaches physical education at Cheney Middle School and driver’s education at the Sheyenne 9th Grade Center. His sister, Shelby, is a sixth-grader at Cheney Middle School.
“We asked Jeff if Charley needed anything and Charley’s response was ‘just play some dodgeball for me,’ Cheney Phy. Ed. teacher Cory Hermann said. “We started spreading the word about the fundraiser and people jumped at the opportunity to volunteer and donate to the event. The community support has been outstanding.”
The event will begin with Games Galore inflatable houses, silent auctions and concessions at 5:30 p.m. and the dodgeball tournament will start at 6:30 p.m. Silent auction items from local businesses range in price from $20 to $400.
All proceeds will go to Charley and his family. The Dakota Medical Foundation will be contributing up to $5,000 in matching funds.
“We know that if it was any one of us in the same situation, Jeff and Michelle would be the first people to step up and organize a similar event,” Hermann said. “They are truly wonderful people and Charley has become an inspiration to us all.”
Those unable to attend that would still like to make a donation can do so online at dakmed.org/lendahand.
