West Fargo 10-year-olds headed to World Series
West Fargo 10-year-olds won the Cal Ripken Regional Tournament in Chadron, Neb., and are heading to the 10-Year-Old World Series on Saturday in Winchester, Va.
After beating the host team, Chadron (12-0), and Mount Pleasant, Iowa (16-0) in pool play, West Fargo entered the single elimination tournament as the No. 1 seed.
They played Moose Jaw, Sask., in the first round and won 17-0. Jaden Grefsrud was the winning pitcher. Brennan Haman was 3-3 with an RBI and Cooper Borchardt was 2-3 with 3 RBI.
In the semifinals, the team faced Baxter, Minn., and won 13-5, using an 8 run final inning to put them over the top. Haman got the win and chipped in 2 RBI to help his own cause. Jordan Burchill was 3-4.
In the finals, they faced South East Denver, Colo., winning 10-8. It was a back and forth affair, but West Fargo took the lead for good with a three-run final inning.
Grefsrud got the win, and Caden Mattson got the save by striking out the final Denver hitter with bases loaded to preserve the win. Borchardt was 3-4 with 2 RBI. Haman and Caden Zepeda each chipped in two hits.
Other members of the team are: Evan Berg, Max Burkhart, Trent Freih, Tate Gustafson, James Hagen, Matthew Heupel, and Carter Schmitz.
The team is coached by Kyle Berg, Manix Zepeda and Brian Borchardt.
