West Fargo to celebrate annual Winter Days fun
There will certainly be no shortage of snow for outdoor activities during this year's West Fargo Park District sponsored Winter Days set to run Jan. 13 to Jan. 23 at a variety of locations throughout the community.
Activity highlights will include the ever popular Silver Snowflake Search, "Create the Cover" Contest, the Best Chili Cook-off, Snow Golf Tournament, Frosty Fun in Elmwood Park, West Fargo Senior Citizen Luncheon, Cheney Middle School Teen Dance, and the Winter Days Party, a big event for the youth.
Kim Wangler, recreation specialist for the West Fargo Park District and a co-coordinator of the event, said there is a lot of snow throughout Elmwood Park and it will "help immensely" with all the outdoor activities planned. "We encourage everyone wanting to beat the winter blues to come out and have a good time throughout Winter Days with family and friends. Hopefully, the temperatures will be a little warmer, but if they are not, people will just have to dress for conditions."
The 11-day event will offer up a mix of indoor and outdoor fun, featuring something for all age levels, working off of the popular yearly activities and adding just a few new items, which this year includes expanding the snowflake search to four locations instead of the standard three.
The Winter Days Party will serve as the kickoff event Saturday, Jan. 16, from 4 to 7 p.m., geared for youngsters and their families, at the Cheney Middle School, with a full slate of activities, including interactive kid's music with a DJ, the inflatable bounce and slide, giant slide, games, face painting, and balloon sculptures. Pizza and pop will be served, starting at 5 p.m. while supplies last. A Magic Show with Jeffrey Salveson will begin at 6 p.m. in the theater.
Frosty Fun in Elmwood Park will be the big event on Sunday, Jan. 17, from 1 to 3 p.m. Everyone is encouraged to attend and take part in an afternoon of outdoor winter happenings including a sledding parade, sleigh rides compliments of the Red River Harness Club, winter archery, Sno Bear rides, snowshoe demos and races, as well as snow digging for prizes. Hot chocolate and refreshments will be served.
The beginning of the week will also feature several other exciting activities for the youngsters in the warmth of the West Fargo Public Library, located in the Lodoen Community Center at 109 3rd St. E.
Monday, Jan 18, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Craft Time for all Ages, will focus on creating a snowflake suncatcher; Tuesday, Jan. 19, from 1:30 to 2 p.m., storytime for preschoolers will be held featuring "Tacky and the Winter Games," including the story and making and taking a craft. Preregistration for these sessions can be completed by calling the library at 701-433-5460.
Wednesday, Jan. 20, the movie "Iron Will," will be shown at 6 p.m. at the library, complete with free popcorn.
The West Fargo Senior Luncheon will be the mainstay event on Thursday, Jan. 21, at 12 noon at the Speedway Events Center, 680 Main Ave. W., including a free chicken dinner, entertainment, and bingo for West Fargo Senior Citizens. Those attending must pre-register by Wednesday, Jan. 13, by calling the West Fargo Park District at 433-5360.
The 18th Annual Snow Golf Tournament is also once again part of the mix, offering nine holes of winter snow golf play from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Jan. 23, in North Elmwood Park. Registration fee will be $5 per person.
The culminating Winter Days event on Saturday, Jan. 23, will be West Fargo's Best Chili Cook-off set for the West Fargo VFW, providing the opportunity for everyone to enter their favorite chili and vie for one of three prizes: $100 for first place, $75 for second place and $50 for a third place effort. Individuals must be 21 years of age to enter. A variety of door prizes will also be part of the fun, along with enjoying free chili samples after the judging is complete. Entry fee for the contest is $7. Pre-registration for the event is preferred, but if individuals decide at the last minute they want to participate, they can take their chili and sign-up at the VFW.
The evening will conclude with a dance featuring the band "Cousin B" from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.
The popular Snowflake Search will be an ongoing part of Winter Days, with participants checking out the clues and hunting for four silver snowflakes in their quest to win a variety of prizes including: two, $150 Hornbacher's grocery gift certificates, $100 in Petro Serve USA gas certificates, a $100 West Acres gift card, and a hot cocoa break basket along with a 3-month subscription to the Forum which includes the West Fargo News. The first clue will be posted on Jan. 13, in the West Fargo News or on wfparks.org. Clues will also be posted at the West Fargo Park District office and the West Fargo Chamber.
In addition, community members can enter the West Fargo Parks "Create the Cover of the Spring/Summer 2010 Activity Guide" Contest, which involves creating a work of art that helps picture summer fun and excitement in the community parks that will be featured on the front of the publication. The winner will receive a $100 West Acres gift card. Entries must be returned by Jan. 25, to the West Fargo Park District office, 500 13th Ave. W., West Fargo or e-mailed to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Residents can also complete the Winter Days Crossword Puzzle and be eligible to receive a prize. Pick up a copy of this special crossword puzzle, complete it and return it to the Park District office. The crossword puzzle will also be printed in the Jan. 13 edition of the West Fargo Pioneer. One entry is allowed per person. The deadline for submitting the puzzle is Jan. 22, at 4 p.m.
