The West Fargo City Commissioners voted 5-0 Monday at their regularly scheduled Monday night meeting to implement the standard city watering restrictions that ask property owners not to do any outdoor watering from noon to 6 p.m., and to water on odd and even-numbered days only, depending upon their house number.

Owners of properties with addresses ending in an odd number are allowed to water only odd-numbered days, and owners of properties with addresses ending in an even number can water only on even-numbered days.

Outdoor watering includes running sprinklers and using a garden hose. Activities may include, but are not limited to, watering lawns, landscaping and gardens.

Public Works Director Barry Johnson said the restrictions are the same as the ones put in place every year, and that the main reason for initiating them now is to try to spread out the peaks caused by everyone watering at the same time.

This is the phase 1, voluntary portion of the plan. Consequently, there will be no penalties. However, if a drought occurs, and the plan needs to move into phase 2, Johnson said that could change. "This method worked really well last year," he said. "The best enforcement was the neighbors."
