West Fargo School Board narrows school name list to six
The school board has narrowed down its list of names for the newest elementary school to be west of Ninth Street West, near 52nd Avenue South, in The Wilds Subdivision.
Heather Konschak, community relations coordinator said the district received 198 name submissions and of those, 130 were unique. The submissions included words or phrases as well as names of those who have made an impact on the West Fargo community.
On Monday night, the list of names had been whittled down to 15 choices and included Governor Art Link and Rasmussen, which was meant to honor longtime Police Chief Arland Rasmussen and his wife Verna, a longtime employee of the district.
Board member Jeff Shirley said he liked the idea of honoring Link, a former North Dakota governor who was known for his land preservation, but his name was eventually removed as well as Rasmussen’s.“I have great respect for Arland, but it just didn’t seem like a great connection for a school,” Shirley said.Board members have suggested naming a school after Superintendent David Flowers who has repeatedly discouraged the idea.Business Manager Mark Lemer said the school district has a policy that in order for a building to be named after someone in the district, the person must be out of service to the district for two years. The board settled on six final names to choose from: Courage, Heritage, Legacy, Louise M. Dardis, Martin, and The Wilds. School board members will now rank the names in order of their preference and then the board will decide on a new name at its March 24 meeting.
