Members of Boy Scout Troop 279 of West Fargo manned the Salvation Army Kettle at SunMart this past Friday. Thirteen scouts and five leaders rotated through the hour long shifts to cover the ten-hour day. Organizers say they are thankful the scouts could help out as collection locations are sometimes hard to staff on Black Friday.
The scouts routinely volunteer in their community as a requirement of the scouting program. Most often the time spent volunteering results in very positive comments from the scouts who enjoy having a positive impact on the community. "Bell ringing was fun. Just about everyone who came into the store gave something," said Second Class Scout Nick Dosch. The Red Kettle Campaign is the Salvation Army's major fund source.
Troop 279 partnered with Troop 232 and 274 to assist the West Fargo VFW Auxiliary with Make a Difference Day on Oct. 29. Projects included leaf raking and rain gutter cleaning. Troop 279 also helped the Fargo Food Pantry on Nov. 29 sorting food and stocking shelves with the items collected during the recent Fill the dome Food Drive.
