West Fargo VFW to host Vietnam Veterans Day
Arthur W. Jones VFW Post 7564 will host Vietnam Veterans Day on March 29 at the VFW Club in West Fargo at 308 Sheyenne St. Vietnam veterans are encouraged to attend the event that is open to the public for ages 21 and over.
Each year the governor shall issue a proclamation on March 29 in honor and remembrance of surviving and departed Vietnam veterans, including the 198 individuals from North Dakota whose names are listed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. and those veterans who are or were missing in action or prisoners of war.
Free chili and beer will be served from 1 to 5 p.m. At 5 p.m., John Gwizdak, past national VFW commander-in-chief and fellow Vietnam veteran, will be the guest speaker.
Gwizdak, of Woodbury, Ga., was elected VFW’s commander-in-chief in 2000 and has been inducted into the United States Army Officer Candidate School Hall of Fame.. Born in Revloc, Pa., and raised in Carrolltown, Gwizdak enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1958. He retired in 1978 in the rank of captain. His service career included three tours in Germany, including a rotational tour in Berlin, and in Vietnam with Co. E, 4th Bn., 12th Infantry, 199th Light Infantry Brigade. He held the distinction of having served in all leadership positions from squad leader to company commander of an infantry company. Gwizdak has been awarded many military awards and decorations including the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, four awards of the Bronze Star Medal (including one for valor) and the Purple Heart, among others.
