West Fargo multi-sport athlete Tia Lopez recently signed a national letter of intent with Northern State University in Aberdeen, S.D., to play soccer.
Lopez is in her senior year with the Packers soccer team, and is a two-time All-EDC team member. She also was selected as the team's best offensive player in 2007 and '08, and earned the Coaches Award last season as a junior.
Besides her soccer career, Lopez is a three-year letter-winner and team captain for the West Fargo girls hockey team, which won the North Dakota state tournament earlier this year.
NSU is part of the NCAA Division II Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, which consists of 14 regional colleges that include Minnesota State University-Moorhead, Bemidji (Minn.) State University and University of Mary-Bismarck.
Last season, NSU finished 7-8-6 overall and 5-4-4 during conference play. The Wolves were ousted in the first round of the NSIC tournament 1-0 to eventual champion Minnesota-Duluth.
For 10 straight years, the NSU soccer squad has been named a recipient of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Adidas Team Academic Award. The Wolves were one of 339 women's programs to earn a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. NSU tabulated a team GPA of 3.51 and was one of just 32 teams to post a GPA of 3.50 or better.
Tia is the daughter of Bill and Tammy Lopez, West Fargo.
