July 10 was an exciting day for Maren Michelle Thurn.

It was that day the 10-year-old Freedom Elementary student learned she had been selected to participate in the softball throw competition at the Hershey’s Track and Field Run, Jump and Throw National Finals.

Thurn made the journey to Hershey, Pa., on Aug. 2, and on her third attempt chucked the softball 133 feet, 4 inches, a personal record and enough for a second-place finish.

Kayla Johnson won the event with a throw of 145 feet.

Since the first competition this year, Thurn’s distances have gotten better.

At regionals held at Fargo South in May, Thurn’s farthest throw was 124 feet, 4 inches, and at state in West Fargo, she finished with a toss of 126 feet, ¾ inches.
