Winter Days takes on a little bit different twist this year, accented by the continuation of warmer temperatures (at least not below zero readings) and the present lack of snow, which in reality, could be a great thing in terms of upping attendance figures.

The only downside could be the cancellation of one of the longstanding events, the popular sleigh rides, which will be contingent upon whatever precip is on the ground the day the event rolls around.

However, the popular Snow Golf Tourney will go on regardless, with those participating may having to try their luck on the browned grass at North Elmwood Park, an act that could lend itself to improved outcomes for many of the golfers who look forward to this annual play stop.

The West Fargo Park District Winter Days gets underway Friday, Jan. 13, continuing through Jan. 21. The kickoff event will take place at the West Fargo Public Library at 10:30 a.m., Friday, with a free movie and popcorn for preschoolers and their caregivers.

Saturday the action heats up with the free Winter Days party at the Cheney Middle School from 1 to 3:30 p.m. featuring sleigh rides or carriage rides (weather permitting), inflatable games, balloon sculptures, and interactive music for the kids complete with disc jockey. Those attending will also be able to decorate a cookie, partake in face painting and games, and enjoy hot chocolate. The afternoon will also feature special performances: Tae Kwon Do at 1:30 p.m. and Halftime by Sheri Dance Studio at 2:30 p.m.

The Snow Golf Course will be open both Saturday and Sunday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in North Elmwood Park. Participants are asked to bring their golf clubs and tennis balls and play a round of golf on the nine-par course and then sign up for the Snow Golf Tournament that is scheduled for Jan. 21.

Sunday will also offer an open skate evening of indoor family fun at the Veterans Memorial Arena from 7 to 8:30 p.m. that will also take place on Monday, from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Those planning on attending are asked to bring their own skates as rentals will not be available. Charge for this event is $1 per skater.

New Winter Day highlights will be the mainstay on Monday, Jan. 16, with the Polar Bear Pool Party at L.E. Berger Elementary School from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. followed by Holiday Bingo at the West Fargo Public Library from 4 to 5 p.m.

The pool party will consist of games, open swim, beach party music, and door prizes all at no charge. Those attending must be 46 inches tall or accompanied by a parent.

The bingo is open to youth of all ages and is also free.

That evening a Crochet Jewelry Class will also be held at the library from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Call to register for this free class at 701-433-5460.

A second session of Movies and Popcorn will be held at the library on Friday, Jan. 20 at 10:30 a.m.; and Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the library will be the site for a Bag Book Sale, hosted by the Friends of the Library.

Two huge events will conclude Winter Days festivities on Saturday, Jan. 21: the 20th Annual Snow Golf Tournament and West Fargo's Best Chili Cook-off.

The nine-holes of golf will be played from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in North Elmwood Park, at a free of $5 per person. Tees times can be reserved by calling 433-5360.

The annual Chili Cook off headquartered out of the West Fargo VFW follows the snow golf tourney with check-in time for entries from 3 to 4 p.m. with judging getting underway at 4 p.m. Three prizes will be awarded: first place, $100; second place, $75; and third place, $50.

Those entering must be 21 years and older. Entry fee is $8. Door prizes will also be featured and following the judging, those attending will be able to enjoy chili samples.

A variety of fun and challenging games will begin at 4:30 p.m. with the opportunity to win a $50 prize.
