Winter Days fun ahead
Winter Days 2008, set for Jan. 18 through Jan. 26 at various locations throughout the community, promises to once again offer something for everyone with a magnitude of fun events coordinated by West Fargo Park District staff.
A new facet of this year's festivities will be a Silver Snowflake Search that will run from Jan. 16 through Jan. 27. Winners will be posted as hidden snowflakes are found. Participants will hunt for three silver snowflakes hidden above ground at public locations. The prizes are $200 in grocery gift certificates to Hornbacher's; $100 in Sooper Stop gift certificates; and $50 in Chamber Bucks and a one-year subscription to the West Fargo Pioneer.
Clues and rule locations will be announced in the Jan. 16 and Jan. 23 issues of the Pioneer, will be posted at main entrance windows at the West Fargo Park District, West Fargo Pioneer, Sooper Stop, West Fargo Area Chamber of Commerce, and also be available on the following Web sites: www.WFParks.org, www.westfargochamber.com, and www.westfargopioneer.com.
Winter Days itself will kick off Friday evening, Jan. 18, with the ever-popular Chili Cook-off at the West Fargo VFW, 308 Sheyenne St., where participants, age 21 and older, can enter their favorite recipe to take home a prize - $100 for first, $75 for second, and $50 for third. Check-in is from 5 to 6 p.m., with judging to begin at 6 p.m. After judging, free chili samples will be available to the public.
The Frozen T-shirt Contest and Sumo Wrestling will follow at 7 p.m., with four people having the chance to use their creativity to melt a frozen t-shirt and win $50. Music by "Past Due" will conclude the opening night activities from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.
Saturday, Jan. 19, featured events will include the 16th annual Snow Golf Tournament from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in North Elmwood Park. Participants are asked to reserve their tee times at the West Fargo Park District Office. Registration fee is $6 for adults and $3 for ages 17 and under. A Pinochle Tournament at the West Fargo VFW will also be a part of Saturday action, with registration at 9:30 a.m. and play beginning at 10:30 a.m.
Sunday, Jan. 20, activities will focus on Frosty Fun in Elmwood Park from 1 to 4 p.m., consisting of free sleigh rides by the Red River Harness Club; dog sled rides; a snow dig for prizes, winter archery compliments of the Camp Fire USA; a sledding parade and party; kid's winter crafts; and snowshoe demos and races sponsored by Scheels All Sports.
The remainder of the Winter Days celebration will be filled with a variety of other events including:
Skating Games at Herb Tintes Park, Tuesday, Jan. 22. Bring the family and enjoy an evening of free outdoor games and races from 5 to 7 p.m. The park is located at Seventh Avenue and First Street East.
*On Thursday, Jan. 24, a Senior Luncheon at noon at the Veterans Memorial Arena, featuring a free chicken dinner, entertainment and bingo. Those planning to attend must register by Monday, Jan. 21, by calling the Park District at 433-5360.
*The Winter Days Grand Finale, sponsored by the West Fargo Park District and Lutheran Family Ford, will wrap up the festivities on Saturday, Jan. 26, at the Cheney Middle School. The schedule will include: a big screen movie "Snow Day" at 3 p.m.; inflatable bounce and slide, carnival games, sumo wrestling, face painting, close-up magic and balloon sculptures from 4 to 7:30 p.m.; pizza and pop, while supplies last, at 5 p.m.; Magician Jeffrey Salveson at 5:30 p.m.; and Penny and Pals at 6:30 p.m.
The annual Winter Days Word Find will also be a part of the event, with copies available at the Park District office and also appearing in the Pioneer Jan. 16. Everyone who completes a puzzle will be eligible to win a prize. Deadline for entry is Jan. 25 at 4 p.m.
