Wolves nab Gunning
Another Packer is heading to Northern State University in Aberdeen, S.D., this fall.
Wolves head swimming coach Elyce Kastigar recently announced the signing of Samantha Gunning to a National Letter of Intent to enroll in classes and their swimming program. Gunning was one of two recent signees, the other being Ceanna Johnson of Cut Bank, Mont.
"Both Samantha and Ceanna will have an immediate impact on our scoring throughout the season," Kastigar said. "These two student-athletes will bring depth and strength to our program. Gunning adds versatility and will impact the 200 and 400 individual medleys, and Johnson gives us depth in the butterfly and sprint freestyle events.."
Gunning goes to Northern State after a solid six-year career at West Fargo. She was named Rookie of the Year in 2005, Hardest Worker in 2008, and Co-MVP in 2009. She concluded her senior season with captain, MVP and All-Eastern Dakota Conference honors in 2010. Outside of swimming, Gunning was involved in fine arts activities, National Honor Society and the Principal's Advisory Committee.
Gunning is the daughter of Kurt Gunning, who was a fullback at North Dakota State when the Bison won the Division II national championship in 1990.
Both Gunning and Johnson will join Hailey Zimmer from Ladysmith, Wis., who signed during the NCAA's early signing period in November.
Gunning is the second Packer to recently sign with the Wolves. Zach Neer will be attending NSU as a football recruit.
