The Packer wrestling team showed this weekend that they haven’t missed a beat since winning the state title.

The team rolled over the competition in Saturday’s Dan Unruh Memorial Tournament in Wahpeton, taking first place out 14 teams with a total score of 320.5, setting a new tournament record and beating second-place Frazee by almost 140 points.

"It was a very good start to our season,” head coach Kayle Dangerud said. “Our guys won some hard-fought matches. Even though we had some success, we still need to work on a number of different positions and techniques.”

The team ended the day with seven tournament champions, four runners-up and one wrestler finishing in third-place. In total, they only lost 11 matches throughout the tournament.

Four wrestlers -- 106-pound Jared Franek, 145-pound Anjelo Shepherd, 152-pound Jesse Shearer and 195-pound Tanner Kuznia -- won their first-place matches by a major decision.

138-pound junior Jordan Shearer pinned Peter Hansen of Brookings in 3 minutes 15 seconds to take his weight-class title.

The Packers travel to Grand Forks on Friday to participate in the Grand Forks Sertoma Dual Tournament, beginning at 3 p.m.

“We look forward to a good week of practice and improving each day,” Dangerud said. “The GF Sertoma is a tough dual tournament, and we need to be ready to compete.”
