Kenneth R. Sveum Sr., 83, West Fargo, was called home Monday, July 26, 2010 at Palliative Care in Sanford Hospital, Fargo, surrounded by his family.
Kenneth Reginald Sveum Sr. was born on December 10, 1926 to Clifford & Alice (Duncan) Sveum in Sheldon, N.D. He was raised and educated in McLeod, N.D. He then moved to Montana and later served in the Army as a mess cook for two years. On March 27, 1945, Kenneth married Glorella Thue and lived in Wyndmere, N.D. They moved to Fargo in 1949.
Ken worked as a truck driver at Red Owl, delivering groceries in the tri-state area for 39 years. After he retired in 1989, he worked at the Red River Valley Fairgrounds for 17 years at the race track and Big Iron.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and Eagles. Ken had 38 years of service to the Teamsters Union, 12 years as an executive board member of Local 116 and eight years as a member of Joint Council. He loved his family and friends and get-togethers. He enjoyed farming, fishing, traveling, playing cards, cooking, volunteering, and car races.
He is survived by his wife Gloria; two sons, Kenneth Jr. (Fargo), Jeff ( Denver, Colo.), daughter, Debbie (West Fargo); two granddaughters Beth Sveum, Fargo, and Shannon Wright, West Fargo; Sisters, Lila Halmrast, Milnor, N.D., Yvonne Odegard Milnor, N.D., Carol Griggs, California, and Grace Melton, California; Brothers, Jerry (Betty) Sveum, Mt. Vernon, Mo., Cecil(Jerri) Sveum, Columbia, S.C., Curtis (Donna) Sveum, Missouri, and Gene Sveum, Virginia.
Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Alice Sveum; brothers, George and Dale Sveum; sisters, Audry Odegard, Celia Halmrast, and Gloria Sanders; daughter-in-law, Julie Sveum.
Visitation and prayer services were held on Friday, July 30, 2010 at West Funeral Home, West Fargo.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, July 31, 2010 in Bethany Lutheran Church, McLeod, N.D. Burial was at Freeman Cemetery, McLeod, N.D.
