Mona Jean Flaten, 47, West Fargo, ND, died Wednesday, March 23, 2011, of injuries sustained from a motorcycle accident in Chandler, Ariz.

Mona, daughter of Kenneth and Alfa Haugen, was born on Aug. 24, 1963, in Fargo, N.D. She grew up on a farm near Aneta, N.D., and attended school in Northwood, N.D., graduating in 1981. She was baptized and confirmed in West Union Lutheran Church. Mona enjoyed being the organist at her church during her high school years. Mona attended North Dakota State University in Fargo, graduating after just three years, in 1984 with a degree in Humanities and Social Sciences. While attending college, she worked at the Naturalizer shoe store.

She married the love of her life, Dan Flaten, on June 29, 1985. They met and dated in high school, and had just celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in July 2010 at their lake home on Bass Lake, surrounded by their family and friends. Mona and Dan welcomed son Bryan Daniel in 1987 and son Derek Scott in 1990. Mona was also reunited with her birth family in 1991.

Mona entered the workforce in October 1984 for the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, as a National Bank examiner, in Fargo. In January 1995, she began working for Community First Bankshares (now Bank of the West) as Vice President, Internal Audit Director. She retired from the banking industry in 2004.

After retiring, Mona continued to stay involved by helping Dan with the accounting aspects of their various businesses and farm. In the last couple of years, she became even more hands-on in their farm business by helping (drive grain cart) during harvest. She also spent some time as a consultant doing bank audits.

One of Mona’s favorite hobbies was scrapbooking. She became a Creative Memories consultant in 2002 and loved helping people share their memories and creating memorable albums of her own with her friends.

Mona loved a lot of things: Spending time with her family, taking care of her two boys, holding her granddaughter, riding motorcycles with Dan, sewing, vacations in Mexico, bargain hunting, getting pedicures and manicures, hanging out at the lake with family and friends, reading romance novels, investment club, going out on dates with Dan and their friends, taking pictures, drinking a nice, cold, Diet Mountain Dew.

Mona was a social person with a wide network of friends and acquaintances. She had a beautiful smile and a cheerful, positive energy that those around her couldn’t help but notice and be inspired by. She was a mentor to many people and had a profound impact on many people.
