Shelter Fest to benefit Churches United children
Flame of Faith United Methodist Church, 1222 6th St. E. will be hosting Shelter Fest on Thursday, Sept. 5, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
This event was dreamed up and organized by 11 year-old Heidi Deplazes in an effort to meet the current needs of the homeless kids at Churches United. At the end of September a complete extreme makeover of the playground will be done at Churches United so the children have a place to play.
Shelter Fest will be a mix of all of Heidi's favorite activities -- a block party, streets alive, a carnival and a big silent auction to cover the expense of the playground makeover. Barbecues, hot dogs and watermelon will also be served.
So whether you are two or 102 there is definitely a way for everyone to become involved in this community project. There will be over 20 free activities for kids along with free entertainment. The silent auction will feature items and services valued at over $11,000. T
There is no admission charge to the event but those attending are asked to make a monetary donation or take items for children, including size 4, 5 & 6 diapers, wipes, sippy cups, fans, new gym shoes and winter boots in kids sizes, basketballs and soccer balls, heavy duty playground toys, kids bikes with training wheels and teen mountain bikes or gently used clothing with no stains or holes, and gently used toys in like new condition, or anything else appropriate.
