William J. Martin, 84, Fargo, died Saturday, April 9, 2005, at Manor Care Health Services, Fargo. The prayer service will be at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 13, at the Boulger Funeral Home in Fargo and visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 14, at St. Benedicts Catholic Church, rural Horace. Burial will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 14, at the Enderlin Cemetery, Enderlin.

William J. Martin was born on Feb. 8, 1921, in Enderlin, to William J. and Ida (Ziegler) Martin. He graduated from Enderlin High School, Enderlin in 1939. He attended Wahpeton Science School in Wahpeton, graduating in 1941 from the sheet metal and air conditioning program. He served in the United States Navy from 1942 through 1945 primarily based in the South Pacific. He began working for the United States Postal Service in 1946, and retired in July of 1978. On Sept. 7, 1957, he married Sarah E. (Betty) Simmons of Eskridge, Kan., in Los Angeles. They lived in rural South Fargo where they built their home in 1962, and continued to live there until his death. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved tending his big garden until health issues forced him to stop. William fished over 50 years out of Long Point Resort on Lake of the Woods, Minn. Also William co-founded the Retired Postal Workers Breakfast which met monthly in Fargo.

William is survived by his wife, Sarah, children, Debra L. Martin, Plymouth, Minn.; William J. (Cynthia) Martin Jr., Belen, N.M.; and Robert J. Martin, Fargo, and his sisters: Helen, Nolan, Papillion, Neb.; Lois Stockart, Surprise, Ariz.; and Catherine (Bernie) Trask, Litchfield Park, Ariz.

William is preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers, John and Jerome.
