Filing protocol in place for would-be candidates

With the City election in June almost right around the corner, now is the time for anyone considering a bid to circulate petitions and announce candidacies for any of the four open positions in the City of West Fargo race.

On the City Commission side the two four-year terms presently held by Mark Simmons and Brenda Warren will be up for grabs, along with the two four-year Park Board seats of Gary Fugere and Kathy Scully.

So far, an incumbent candidate and a newcomer have thrown their hats into the ring for bids for the City Commission posts.

In order to qualify as a candidate, individuals must be an eligible City voter and a resident for at least nine months prior to election.

Those considering seeking a position must also circulate a petition that is available at West Fargo City Hall. The signature requirement is not less than ten percent of the number of qualified electors who voted for that office in the last City election, with no more than 300 signatures required. Only 1,112 people voted in the Commissioner race in the 2006 election, therefore requiring 112 signatures, while 1,137 voted for Park Board candidates that same election, making the requirement for the Park Board positions 114 signatures.

Petitions must be filed by 4 p.m., Friday, April 11, at the City Administrator's offices in West Fargo City Hall, 800 4th Ave. E., in order to qualify as a candidate in the June election.
