Dagwood would love these!

Why is it that whenever I think of a sandwich, Dagwood comes to mind?? While none of these "stack" up to one of his specials, I think you will enjoy them. Most of us think of a sandwich as something to eat at noon, there is no reason why you can't surprise your family with some special sandwiches at dinnertime. Serve them with a salad, or a bowl of homemade soup, and watch them clean their plates!

Some of these recipes are not your traditional sandwiches, but trust me - they are delicious!

Thaw one loaf frozen bread dough and spread out on a cookie sheet, about 8-1/2 by 11 size. Brush with melted butter.

Sprinkle with a mixture of ¼ tsp. garlic - salt, powder, or minced, ¼ tsp. oregano, ½ tsp. parsley, ¼ tsp. Italian seasoning, 1 c. shredded Cheddar cheese and 1 c. shredded mozzarella cheese.

Place pepperoni slices generously on top. Roll up and pinch ends.

Brush top with butter and bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

Cut in slices to serve.

Chicken/Cheddar Grill

Cut French or Italian bread lengthwise.

Top with slices of Cheddar or American cheese, chunky salsa, sliced chicken or turkey breast, and top with a second slice of cheese.

Bake on a cookie sheet at 350 degrees for 8-10 minutes, or until cheese is melted.

Taco in a Bag

The kids will love this - make sure you clip out this recipe for summer picnics!

2 lbs. ground beef

2 pkgs. Taco mix

Chopped lettuce

Chopped onion

Diced tomato

Sliced ripe olives

Sour cream

Shredded Cheddar cheese

1 oz. pkgs. Doritos - Nacho flavor is best. You can buy these in bags of 12 individual packages at most supermarkets, Sam's or Walmart Super Stores.

Prepare taco meat according to package directions. Line up other ingredients on the counter. Each person squeezes a bag of Doritos until it pops, then squeeze some more to coarsely crush the chips.

Move along the counter, putting your favorite toppings right in the bag, starting with the Taco meat and ending with the cheese.

Eat right out of the bag. When done, throw it in the garbage and enjoy your evening!

Pizza Spread

1 lb. ground beef

Chopped medium onion

½ lb. grated Cheddar cheese

1 can tomato soup

1 small can chopped ripe olives

1 tsp. oregano

1 tsp. garlic salt

Brown and cool hamburger and onion, drain. Mix with other ingredients and spread on split hamburger buns. Broil 2 minutes, or until bubbly. These can be prepared ahead of time and kept in refrigerator or freezer.

Spoon Burgers

1 lb. ground beef

1 clove garlic, minced

1 medium onion, chopped

1 tsp. salt

¾ c. Dr. Pepper

1 6 oz. can tomato paste

1 Tbls. Worcestershire sauce

Few drops hot pepper sauce, to taste

Brown meat, breaking into small pieces. Add garlic, onion and salt and cook for 5 minutes. Drain. Add remaining ingredients and simmer about 20 minutes, or until thick. Spoon onto toasted hamburger buns. This makes 8 burgers.

Hot Doggities

My kids used to love the grandchildren do!

Score surface of hot dogs, spiraling down from end to end.

Roll each hot dog in ketchup, then in corn flake crumbs to coat. Place in foil lined shallow pan - don't crowd them.

Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes.

Hot Dogs in a Blanket

Another quick and easy hot dog recipe that has been around for 100 years...

Unroll crescent rolls. Place a slice of cheese on each roll - cut the American slices on a diagonal to fit the roll.

Place a hot dog on top of the cheese, and roll up the crescent roll from wide end to narrow tip.

Place on foil-lined cookie sheet and bake as directed on the crescent roll container.

Pizza Burgers #1

4 lbs. ground beef

1-2 large onions, chopped

¾ stalk celery, chopped

1 small can tomato paste

1 can tomato soup

1 jar spaghetti sauce with meat

1 can mushrooms, drained

1 lb. cubed Cheddar cheese

18 buns, split

Brown meat, onion and celery. Drain. Add ½ tsp. of chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper and oregano.

Stir in remaining ingredients, but remove from heat so cheese does not melt.

If you want to freeze, do so before adding cheese...

Spread on ½ of bun and bake at 325 degrees for 20 minutes - or they can also be broiled.

Pizza Burger #2

½ lb. mozzarella cheese

1 can tomato paste

¼ lb. butter

¼ tsp. garlic powder

1 Tbls. grated onion

1 can Spam

1 diced green pepper

½ tsp. oregano

Grate cheese and Spam. Melt butter. Mix all ingredients together and chill. When ready to serve, spread on buttered buns and broil. This keeps for days in the refrigerator.

Tuna Eggwiches

Another of my kids very favorites...

1 can tuna fish

1/3 c. chopped celery

2 hard-cooked eggs, chopped

¼ c. mayonnaise

¼ tsp. salt

1 Tbls. chopped pimento

Dash pepper

Combine all ingredients and spread on buns.

You can also wrap the buns in foil and heat until warm - this is REALLY good.

I also sometimes add shredded cheese - especially if I am going to heat them.

Taco burgers

1 lb. ground beef

1 16-oz. can diced tomatoes

1 pkg. taco seasoning mix

¼ pkg. onion soup mix

2 Tbls. Dried onion flakes

Brown beef and drain. Add tomatoes and stir together. Add remaining ingredients and mix well. Bring to boil, simmer 2 hours.

Spoon on toasted buns, sprinkle with shredded Cheddar cheese and shredded lettuce.
