Kindergarten center hosts Family Literacy Event

The Family Literacy Event held at the West Fargo Kindergarten Center on May 15, was a huge success, with students and their families lining the hallways and classrooms. The Share A Story event was sponsored by Prairie Public and Target, with community involvement from the West Fargo Police, Parks, and Fire Departments, West Fargo Library, SAFE Kids Coalition, Child ID, NDSU Extension Service, Barnes and Noble, Packatahnas, PTO, Boys Scouts, Girls Scouts, and others.

Each classroom offered fun activities for the kids to try. In Room 135, while Police officers demonstrated bicycle safety, students were shown how to create edible stoplights by spreading frosting on graham crackers, then sorting red, yellow, and green M&M's to represent the lights.

In Room 107, students drew pictures and created story books on colorful folders. Children lined up to have their picture taken with Clifford, the Big Red Dog, created literacy crafts and projects, and took part in a Child ID program complete with fingerprinting and a photo of each child. Outside in the bus loop, kids were invited to climb up into the seats of a West Fargo Rescue Fire Truck and an FM Ambulance unit.

Next door, in the Lodoen Center, there were computer games and Web site activities, hot dogs and ice cream in the lunchroom, a storyteller in the library, and a book walk and games in the gym.

"The response has been wonderful. We had over 500 people RSVP," Betty Hanson, principal of the West Fargo Kindergarten Center, said.
