New Grimstad award created

An award has been created and named in honor of Rev. Arthur Grimstad, longtime local pastor, educator, Bible study leader and mentor.

The Art Grimstad Christian Leadership Award will be given for the first time this year, according to the Valley Christian Leadership Association, which has created the award with the intention of bestowing it annually upon area Christian laypeople who have had a significant spiritual impact.

Its first recipients will be Sue Kuhn and Dale Hellevang, who have been local leaders of Bible Study Fellowship.

Grimstad, a longtime Lutheran pastor and religion teacher at Concordia College, Moorhead, is credited with significantly influencing the local Christian community.

"As this award was created, it seemed quite appropriate to name it in honor of Art Grimstad," said Jim Christopherson, former Concordia College football coach and member of the Valley Christian Leadership Association board. "Few have had the spiritual impact in our community that he has had."

During his 36 years at Concordia, Grimstad often hosted student Bible studies in his home, with as many as 60 in attendance. He also served as an interim pastor for several local churches, of various denominations.

He is known not only as a pastor and teacher, but also as a mentor and friend to many prominent local figures in the business, professional, political and academic community. His influence crossed denominational lines and drew many in the Fargo-Moorhead metropolitan area together for weekly Bible studies, some of which have been meeting for nearly 30 years.

Grimstad also played a significant role in special events, bringing noted Christian leaders such as Billy Graham, Luis Palau, Chuck Colson, former US Senate Chaplain Richard Halvorson, and former Governor and Congressman Al Quie to town, in recent decades.

The award, honoring Grimstad, will be formally announced and Kuhn and Hellevang will receive it during the annual Harvest Leadership Prayer Breakfast Saturday, Oct. 31, from 8 to 10 a.m. at the Fargo Holiday Inn.

The event, sponsored annually by the Valley Christian Leadership Association for 18 years, also features several local leaders and guest speaker author Barbara Cameron, mother of television and movie star Kirk Cameron.
