West Fargo police crack down on drunk driving

The West Fargo Police Department will be conducting saturation patrols from August 20 through September 6, as part of a nationwide enforcement campaign during the last three weeks of summer called "Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest."

Additional officers will be assigned during the enforcement period to locate and arrest impaired drivers. Funding for the project is provided to law enforcement agencies across North Dakota through the North Dakota Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The West Fargo Police Department hopes that by promoting public awareness of the risks of impaired driving, alcohol-related crashes can be reduced or eliminated.

In 2009, forty percent of motor vehicle fatalities were alcohol-related in North Dakota. In efforts to decrease this percentage of alcohol-related fatalities, the West Fargo Police Department believes it's necessary to conduct saturation patrols to prevent tragic situations from occurring.

"The West Fargo Police Department feels that through the use of media campaigns and saturation patrol efforts the number of fatalities and car crashes will be reduced," states Sgt. Jason Dura.

The number one goal for the West Fargo Police Department is to keep motorists safe on North Dakota's roadways. Dura hopes this extra visibility of officers will make motorists choose not to drink and drive.
