Week In history: Dec. 6, 2017

The first week of December 1997, the front page of the Pioneer carried stories recognizing the accomplishments of two West Fargoans. The first one featured Vickie Boutiette, Westside Elementary remedial reading teacher and North Dakota Teacher of the Year, receiving a Certificate of Recognition from the U.S. Senate from Senator Kent Conrad. Conrad spoke to a packed gymnasium about the value of reading.

The second article told the story of Barney Gaugler's experiences in World War II as part of the 756th Tank Battalion in Europe. He was one of the 42 men in the 760 to return home. Gaugler was awarded several medals including two Purple Hearts, two Silver Stars and a Bronze Star. Shortly before being drafted, Gaugler had met a young woman named Lucille, who maintained a correspondence with him the five years he was in the service. At the time of the article, they had been married for 51 years.
