Major intersection closed for reconstruction work

One of West Fargo's major roadways is closed to through traffic so work can proceed on Phase II of the Main Avenue reconstruction project.

The Main Avenue and Ninth Street East intersection will be closed to north to south through traffic for approximately three weeks (depending on weather), in order for crews to remove the existing intersection pavement and install new underground storm sewer system and water pipelines for the area.

What this means is that motorists traveling on 9th Street East will not be able to cross over Main Avenue and traffic going southbound on 9th Street Northeast will not be able to access Main Avenue. The detour will have them using Center Street /First Street and 45th Street North/South to access the eastbound and westbound route of Main Avenue.

Those traveling northbound on Ninth Street East will be able to access the eastbound and westbound traffic flow of Main Avenue; and motorists will still be able to travel eastbound and westbound throughout the Main Avenue with traffic control in place.

Drivers should also be aware that south frontage road between 17th Street East and 45th Street North has been redirected to an eastbound only one-way route. Businesses along this route are accessible and open to the public via the south frontage road. Motorists using this frontage road will be able to get back into the traffic flow a block south of the Main Avenue /45th Street North intersection.

Detour signage is posted for alternative routes. The speed limit has been set at 25 mph. Motorists need to be alert to workers and equipment, flaggers and signage in the construction area.

On that note, motorists should use caution when traveling through the construction zone. Flaggers are present in the work zone and speeds remain at the reduced 25 mph limit.

Overall work for 2012 includes the complete reconstruction of Main Avenue between 6th St. E. and 45th St. N., including removal of most of the frontage road.

The need for the Main Avenue reconstruction was driven by a number of deficiencies along the project corridor including: Deteriorated pavement, poor intersection geometrics, uncontrolled access, inadequate drainage and a lack of pedestrian/bicycle facilities.

Depending upon the weather, the project is expected to be completed by the end of October 2012.
