Board to add buses

In Monday's meeting, the West Fargo School Board awarded bids for the purchase of three new school buses for the district.

The district's 2012-2013 budget set aside $285,000 for the purchase of three buses, and they have requested bids for one wheelchair-equipped school bus and two activity mini buses.

Depending on availability and delivery, these buses may be utilized as early as the spring semester.

The district will trade in two buses to make room for the new ones, essentially adding one to number of buses currently used by the district.

"The thought behind (adding a bus to the fleet) will be to get a little ahead with our co-curricular programs," business manager Mark Lemer said.

The bid for the wheelchair-equipped bus was awarded to Trucks of Bismarck Inc., who offered a 2014 Freightliner at a net cost of $96,400.

The bus includes an 800-pound lift - better suited for the lifting of heavier, motorized wheelchairs - along with capacity for three wheelchairs and three restraints. While the district's specifications requested a 1,000-pound lift, they felt this bus would still properly suit the needs of the district.

The bid for the two activity mini buses - used primarily for smaller extracurricular teams like golf and tennis - went to Harlow's Bus Sales Inc. out of Rolette, N.D., who offered two 2013 Chevrolet Express 3500's at a net cost of $119,630.

The board also approved recommendations for the 2013-2014 school calendar from the Calendar Committee.
