Annual Shakers event benefits local food pantry
This year's sixth annual Shaker's New Years Eve party will benefit local food needs and the non profit group supporting the effort couldn't be happier.
'We are excited to announce that the Emergency Food Pantry in Fargo was selected as the charity of choice," said Shaker Mitch Finn, who along with eight other West Fargo High School graduates is organizing the fundraiser that will take place Dec. 31 at the Speedway Event Center, 680 W. Main Ave., West Fargo.
In addition fo Mitch, Shakers include Joel Finn, Paul Finn, Jake Lauritsen, Brian Quam, Dewey Vinesett, Mike Migler, Jake Reese and a new member this year, David Schneck,a brother-in-law to Jake Lauritsen and a close friend of the group since the beginning.
Mitch said the group is pleased to have David on board. "He has been instrumental in our continued success as we continue to grow and require more hands on deck; and has been able to obtain some wonderful raffle prizes as well as sell tickets to help bring people in the door.
Committed to donating all proceeds to charity, the Shakers raised over $8,000 last year that was presented to Big Brothers Big Sisters, a program of The Village Family Service Center since 1973. This year they are eyeing $10,000 as their goal for the Emergency Food Pantry, which has been located for 40 years in the Fargo-Moorhead community to help feed the citizens of Cass and Clay counties in times of crisis, unemployment, fire, family violence, medical problems, and other difficult situations. The Pantry provides hungry families and individuals with wholesome food to tide them over during these times of emergency.
The newly renovated, permanent home of the Pantry at 1101 4th Ave. N. in Fargo opened on Monday, Sept. 10, 2012 with hours of operation from 8 a.m. to 12 noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The new location has more space and affords greater efficiency to better serve the needs of the hungry in Cass and Clay counties.
The action to benefit this year's cause will get underway at 7 p. m. with free appetizers served until 9:30 p. m. at which time Skyline will take the stage playing until 2 a.m.
The evening will also again feature a balloon drop sponsored by Bell State Bank & Trust at midnight, a huge part of the celebration excitement.
Drink specials will be offered all night long, and there will be drawings for a variety of new and exciting door prizes, all donated by local businesses. Tickets will be available for purchase on an ongoing basis as the individual items are raffled off.
A number of great prizes will be among the evening raffle items, including an Ipad 4, a wood carving,android tablet, signed Matt Cullen Jersey (Minnesota Wild), Percy Harvin signed photo (Minnesota Vikings), a vacuum, one night stay at the HODO with dinner for two, as well as many more items too numerous to mention.
Finn gives credit where credit is due saying it is the generous support of a variety of sponsors that goes into helping pull the event off each year. Since the event is limited to 500 tickets, those planning on attending should consider purchasing them ahead of time. Ticket price is $15, whether bought in advance or at the door. The ticket price will include the band and appetizers.
