West Fargo senior program progressing

A review of 2012 shows the West Fargo Senior Program continues to grow in popularity. Nearly one thousand more meals were served during the noon meal at Faith Lutheran Church in 2012 when compared to 2011. Other additions to the program include the hiring of Lynette Jacobson as programs coordinator and a number of new activities.

Marv Liedal has been tracking the numbers since the program started. Liedal said, “It is exciting to see the number of people participating in the senior program continuing to rise.” “The program offers an opportunity for the seniors of West Fargo to get out, to enjoy a good conversation and to participate in activities meant for seniors.” according to Liedal.

Marlene Batterberry has handed off most of her programming responsibilities to Lynette Jacobson. “Lynette brings her experience and some new ideas for fun things.” according to Batterberry. Activities are either held at Faith Lutheran Church following the noon meal or at an off-site location like the West Fargo Library. Recently Jacobson arranged for a wine tasting trip to Casselton.

Other changes include the West Fargo Senior Program planning committee becoming registered with the state as a non-profit corporation and having filed for a 501 c 3 status. Eric Rogne said “The ability to seek funding through open solicitations and grant sources will be very beneficial to the program and to the seniors living in West Fargo.” Rogne has been using his contacts in the community to seek out potential funding sources.

“We feel the senior population in West Fargo is currently under served.” stated Mike Reitan who serves on the committee. “To start with programs here at Faith Lutheran Church and to eventually expand to something much larger and inclusive of all seniors in West Fargo is the ultimate goal.” Reitan added. “West Fargo seniors this is your program. This is your opportunity to meet and spend time with friends. You can participate in good conversation and enjoy a wide variety of activities. I would encourage you to give it a try.”

The West Fargo Senior Program meets Monday through Friday at Faith Lutheran Church, 127 2nd Ave. E. in West Fargo, from 11:30 1 p. m. Meals are offered at a donation price of $3.50. To make a meal reservation call 356-2047 at least 24 hours before you plan to attend or register at the church the day before. Most activities are free and open to the public.
