Man suspected of trying to run over Bismarck police officer found in South Dakota

James W. Johnson, 78, of Detroit Lakes, died Monday, December 10, 2007 of acute myelogenous leukemia, at Innovis Hospital, Fargo.

James Wendell Johnson was born to parents William and Hilda (Gudvangen) Johnson on Feb. 28, 1929 in Fosston, Minn. He was raised on a farm northeast of Fosston. He attended Lade School District 187 through grades 1-8, and graduated from Fosston High School in 1947.

Jim entered the United States Army in August 1951. He served with the 24th Infantry Division, 13th Field Artillery Battalion. He received his discharge in August 1953. On June 30, 1956 he married Nora Lindgren at Oak Park Church in Clearbrook, Minn. He graduated from Bemidji State College in 1956 and earned a master's degree from the University of North Dakota in 1962. He taught in high schools in Gonvick, Minn., and in Detroit Lakes, and finished his teaching career at the Detroit Lakes Technical College in 1991. During the summers he drove truck for Fairmont Foods and later Cass Clay Creamery. After retiring from teaching, Jim drove bus for Independent School District 22, retiring in 2001.

Jim was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where he served as treasurer for 22 years. He was also a member of various professional organizations, a lifetime member of the NEA, a member of the Detroit Lakes Eagles, and of the American Legion. Jim enjoyed playing tennis with his daughters. He also enjoyed doing volunteer work with his caring wife -- the super volunteer. Jim was an avid reader, and was known to possess an incredible memory.

Surviving Jim are his wife, Nora Johnson of Detroit Lakes; three daughters, Wendy (Albert) Larew of Brooklyn, N.Y., JeNelle (Fred) Orgas of St. Paul and LeAnn (Andy) Power, of Wethersfield, Conn.; one granddaughter; two sisters, Betty Hoff of St. Augustine, Fla., and Marilyn Stephens of Jacksonville, Fla.; three brothers, Roger (Gwen) Johnson of Fosston, Arnold (Sandy) Johnson of Bossier, La., and Clarence Johnson of Glendale, Calif.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. His parents preceded him in death.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 14, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Detroit Lakes, with the Rev. Ann Newgard-Larson officiating. There will be visitation for one hour prior to the start of services at the church.

Honorary pallbearers will be John Downs, Roger Josephson, Dale Poffenberger, Lee Wahlborg, Roger Johnson, Kermit Skogen and Dewey Buck. Burial will be in Oak Park Church Cemetery, Clearbrook, Minn.
