Doris Olson

Doris A. Olson, 84, of Detroit Lakes, died Sunday, December 9, 2007 at Emmanuel Nursing Home, Detroit Lakes.

Doris was born to Victor E. and Amy A. (Johnson) Leasure on June 28, 1923 in Underwood, N.D. She was raised and educated in Audubon and Detroit Lakes, graduating from Detroit Lakes High School in 1941.

Doris married Elmer Olson on Dec. 30, 1949 in Sisseton, S.D. As a young adult, she cooked in numerous cafés in Detroit Lakes before cooking for the Detroit Lakes school system. Doris was the head cook at Rossman Elementary School for many years, until she retired in the late 1970s. Elmer passed away on Nov. 19, 1984. Doris then ran a day care service from 1984 until 2004. She taught Sunday School and was a confirmation mentor at First Lutheran Church.

Doris loved baking, cooking, playing dominoes, family gatherings, and especially her grandchildren. She was an avid fan of the Vikings, Twins, Lakers and the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux.

Surviving Doris are her children, Jim (Jane) Perkins of East Grand Forks, Minn., Gary Perkins of Annandale, Minn., Vickie (Norman) Strom of Detroit Lakes and Sheldon "Sid" (Laurie) Olson, also of Detroit Lakes; 10 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; one brother: Duane Leasure of Bloomington, Minn.; one sister-in-law, Deloris Leasure of St. Peter, Minn.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her husband Elmer; an infant son, Lyle Wayne Olson; her parents; brother, Don Leasure; and a sister-in-law: Jean Leasure.

Visitation will to take place from 3-7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12 at West-Kjos Funeral Home, Detroit Lakes, with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, at First Lutheran Church of Detroit Lakes, with the Rev. David Peterson officiating.

Doris's grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Detroit Lakes.
