North Dakota Congressional delegation working on 2018 farm bill
FARGO—With only 25 days until the current farm bill expires, the Farm Bill Conference Committee is working to get a new one passed.
North Dakota Senators Heidi Heitkamp and John Hoeven, as well as Representative Kevin Cramer, are part of the committee.
One of the biggest questions in the new farm bill is SNAP reform, and whether the nutrition assistance program will be provided to as many people as in the past.
WDAY News sat down with Senator Heidi Heitkamp, who says strong crop insurance is at the top of the list on her Farm Bill checklist, a priority she shares with her political opponent, Representative Kevin Cramer.
"The biggest priority is always getting a meaningful crop insurance program. We fought back and were successful in making sure we didn't weaken that crop insurance program," North Dakota Senator Heidi Heitkamp said.
"The highest priority of our farmers is the maintenance of a good crop insurance program. I heard it at every town hall and every forum and every conversation with a farmer," North Dakota Representative Kevin Cramer said.
Nine senators and 47 House members make up the committee.
