Pump failure causes huge saltwater spill in northern ND, but dikes hold
BISMARCK -- A pump failure caused a saltwater and oil spill in in Bottineau County in far north-central North Dakota near the Canadian border over the weekend, the North Dakota Oil and Gas Division said Tuesday, Jan. 16.
The company called 31 Operating reported Monday that about 880 barrels of saltwater and 42 gallons or one barrel of oil spilled Sunday at a saltwater disposal well about eight miles east of Mohall, but the substances were contained within the diking on site. About two barrels of saltwater still have to be recovered.
A state inspector has been to the site and will monitor the cleanup.
